New Sunday Times: UTP first private university accredited by Standards Malaysia

Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) became the first private university in the country to be awarded and accredited by the Department of Standards Malaysia. The department accredited UTP's Universal Testing Machine (UTM) Laboratory with the MS ISO/IEC 17025:2005 General Requirements for the Competence of Testing and Calibration Laboratories certification.

Standards Malaysia director-general Fadilah Baharin presented the accreditation certificate to UTP vice-chancellor Datuk Dr Zainal Abidin Kasim during a special ceremony on July 6 at the university.

The UTM Laboratory is managed by Laboratory Facilities and Services Unit (LFSU), one of the units under the Academic Central Services Department at UTP. It had successfully undergone the accreditation process and demonstrated technical competence for mechanical testing and the operation of a laboratory management system. It was accredited with MS ISO/IEC 17025:2005 certification on Feb 1 and the official awarding ceremony has given it an international recognition.

This is mainly because the Malaysian Standards is identical with ISO/IEC 17025:2005 published by the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO). The Laboratory provides tensile testing services for metallic materials as well as unreinforced and reinforced plastics. It is committed to provide the highest quality of services to meet its clients' expectations and requirements. UTM Laboratory works closely with SIRIM and other MS ISO/IEC 17025:2005 accredited laboratories to ensure its services are complying with the standards.

UTP has also applied for nine other accreditations which are Compression Strength Test at its Civil Engineering Concrete Laboratory, PH Test and Total Suspended Solids Test at its Civil Engineering Environmental Laboratory, Carbon Dioxide (C02) in Natural Gas Analysis and Phenol in Water Analysis at its Chemical Engineering Chemical Analysis Laboratory, Compressive Strength and Elastic Moduly of Core at its Petroleum Geosciences Rock Physics and Rock Mechanic Laboratory, Porosity Measurement of Solid Sand Stone at its Petroleum Engineering Core Analysis Laboratory, Rockwell Hardness Test at its Mechanical Engineering Material Laboratory and Calibration of Process Instrument at its Electrical & Electronics Engineering Control & Instrumentation Laboratory.
